In a world hungry for diverse voices and perspectives, there is a significant need for more Black literature written by Black people. It’s time to break the barriers and share your stories with the world. If you’ve ever felt the urge to write a book but didn’t know where to start, I’m here to support you on your journey. In this blog, I want to encourage aspiring authors, publishers, and writers within the African American community to put their stories out there. Together, let’s unlock the power of storytelling and make a lasting impact.

Embracing the Power of self-publishing, vanity publishing, or traditional publishing may seem like an elusive path for many aspiring authors. However, the rise of self-publishing has revolutionized the industry, providing a viable platform to share your work without breaking the bank. I invite you to join my free workshop on self-publishing, where I will guide you through the process and show you that self-publishing is accessible, affordable, and empowering. Together, let’s unleash your creativity and bring your stories to life.

Understanding the Different Publishing Options In the publishing world, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the various options available. In addition to self-publishing, we’ll explore traditional publishing and vanity publishing. By understanding the pros and cons of each approach, you can make an informed decision that aligns with your goals and aspirations as an author. Knowledge is power, and together, we’ll navigate the publishing landscape.

Cultivating the Craft of Writing and Editing Writing is an art form that requires dedication, skill, and honing your craft. In my workshop, we will delve into the intricacies of writing and editing. From crafting compelling characters and narratives to refining your prose, we’ll explore the tools and techniques that will elevate your storytelling. The power of storytelling knows no bounds. As African American writers, we hold within us a wealth of stories that deserve to be heard. By sharing our experiences, we not only enrich the lives of others but also find healing, liberation, and empowerment. I am here to support you on this transformative journey, whether it’s by offering guidance, editing assistance, or simply being a listening ear. Rising South Literacy School is a nonprofit organization committed to celebrating the voice of community members, youth, victims of violence, and community survivors. Through its diversified programs and artistic avenues, Rising South aims to address personal and community healing, with a focus on literacy, trauma recovery, and violence prevention.

The organization's upcoming "From Hidden to Crowned" project explores resilience and empowerment after trauma. Mr. Bryson was scheduled to perform a full concert at Huntsville's Orion Amphitheater on October 4, 2026, as the featured artist for the organization's #StompTheViolence community awareness initiative. The event was designed to bring attention to the devastating effects of domestic violence, gun violence, and other forms of violence impacting families and communities throughout North Alabama and beyond. The re-imagined centerpiece will include performances, dance, and youth-led art displays representing the journey from pain to purpose. Local vocalists will be asked to perform selections inspired by his music, youth-centered artistic presentations, dramatic performances promoting nonviolence, and a fashion showcase highlighting strength, leadership, healing, and positive models of manhood. The event will continue to focus on encouraging our community to choose hope over violence and healing over harm.

Rising South's programming is directly aligned with global health priorities around violence prevention, literacy advancement, and trauma-informed care. The organization leverages digital platforms to extend its reach and impact beyond the local community, while grounding all initiatives in evidence-based research. Through this multifaceted approach, Rising South aims to build a culture of peace, literacy, and collective pride.
