RISING SOUTH LITERACY SCHOOL MOURNS THE PASSING OF LEGENDARY RECORDING ARTIST PEABO BRYSON

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Rising South Literacy School joins millions of fans around the world in mourning the passing of Grammy Award-winning recording artist Peabo Bryson.

Mr. Bryson was scheduled to perform a full concert at Huntsville's Orion Amphitheater on October 4, 2026, as the featured artist for the organization's #StompTheViolence community awareness initiative. The event was designed to bring attention to the devastating effects of domestic violence, gun violence, and other forms of violence impacting families and communities throughout North Alabama and beyond.

While organizers remained hopeful for his recovery, they were saddened to learn of his passing before the rescheduled October performance could take place.

"We are heartbroken by the loss of Mr. Peabo Bryson," said Dr. Dedra Muhammad, Co-Founder of Rising South Literacy School. "Although many people know him as a world-renowned entertainer with an extraordinary catalog of timeless music, we came to know him as a man willing to use his influence to support a cause larger than himself. His willingness to stand with us in the fight against violence spoke volumes about his character and compassion."

Director Cory Rogers echoed those sentiments, noting that Mr. Bryson's participation would have helped amplify an important community message.

"Our hearts and prayers are with Mr. Bryson's wife, family, friends, and fans around the world," Rogers said. "While we are disappointed that Huntsville will not have the opportunity to experience his live performance, we remain grateful that he agreed to partner with us and lend his voice to this important cause."

Founded in part to carry forward the legacy and vision of the late Phillip Muhammad, Rising South Literacy School has worked to address social challenges through education, mentorship, community engagement, and violence prevention initiatives. Organizers say that although Mr. Bryson's concert will not take place, the mission behind the event will continue.

The organization is currently developing a special tribute event for October 4, 2026, that will honor Mr. Bryson's life and legacy while continuing to raise awareness about community violence. The program is expected to feature local artists, youth performances, educational presentations, and other community-centered activities focused on healing, unity, and prevention.

Information regarding ticket refunds for the canceled concert will be released directly to ticket holders.

"Mr. Bryson's music brought people together for decades," said Dr. Muhammad. "Our goal is to honor his memory by continuing the work he agreed to support—bringing people together to build safer, stronger, and more compassionate communities."
