Making Mary makes me feel we are about to take a trip through the past in order to identify all the good, bad, and ugly that makes up the woman Mary will become.
I believe the title means through trials, tribulations and life challenges, Mary becomes the woman of the story. Her character, her personality. Her beliefs. Her morals.
